Sprint Four Production Blog – Synoptic Project

Week 3

18/06/20

This week, after finishing off the menu artwork for my team, I was asked by my friend Dominic Doyle, to produce a quick picture of a young version of a grandpa (who has a sort of antagonist role within their game). Seeing as they do not have a concept artist or artistic lead on their team I agreed to produce a piece of artwork for them. Using the techniques that I have learned from painting the menu artwork, painting will be a much easier process as I begin to create my own unique painting style and production process.

I sketched they young grandpa out in Photoshop and began to work from grayscale as this was meant to be a black and white image due to it being an old photograph. I added in quick light highlights for reference where the light would be shinning on him in the photo. Previously I had watched a video from Insider on a principal illustrator working at Riot Games (named Chengwei Pan) who detailed his artistic process when painting an illustrative piece, which I found very useful during the production of this.

Continuing on from yesterday, I decided to completely remove the background and replace it with a solid grey as well as all light highlights and I also cleaned up the line art and removed the construction lines. I added in a grey multiply gradient and then created a colour dodge layer for light highlight.

Overall I will leave working on this piece here, as continuing working on this will take my focus from working on my own game project – this will be sufficient enough.
